How Does 2-1-1 Save Virginia Money? |
2-1-1 is the national three-digit dialing code for free access to health and human service information and referrals. 2-1-1 was designed to be an easy to remember and widely recognized number that can connect individuals, families, and groups with the appropriate community-based organizations and government agencies to meet their needs.
The number of health and human service organizations, agencies and programs in a community can be overwhelming. In Virginia alone there are over 9,000 registered nonprofits! Navigating through the maze of available services to meet an individual or family’s needs can be a frustrating and time consuming task!
2-1-1 was created to help connect people to the services they need the first time, every time. 2-1-1 makes it possible for residents to locate all of the available resources in their area by dialing one phone number: 2-1-1.
2-1-1 is available over 75% of the United States and by 2010 it is projected that 2-1-1 will be available nationwide! See if your community has 2-1-1.

How Does 2-1-1 Save Virginia Money?
By using 2-1-1 callers limit their calls to nonprofits and agencies who are not equipped to help them with their need or problem.
In addition, employees of nonprofits and government agencies will not need to spend time assisting an individual find the right resources for them. Instead, employees can instruct an individual to call 2-1-1.
2-1-1 can also be used as a social barometer and help the Commonwealth of Virginia understand what citizens’ greatest needs are and if there are enough services to meet those needs.
2-1-1 has also been shown to decrease 9-1-1 costs. It is estimated that over 50% of calls to 9-1-1 in some communities are nonemergency related. Many of these calls relate to needs and problems that 2-1-1 can help with!
Most importantly, 2-1-1 helps save Virginia residents and businesses money. Instead of spending time calling many different services or driving to many different agencies, a resident can call 2-1-1 to make sure their efforts are directed to the service or agency that can best meet their needs. Residents can also access 2-1-1 to help them find ways to save money on everyday costs like prescriptions, utilities, home repairs, and day care services.
Businesses save money on employee productivity. Instead of employees using work time to access services that are only available during the work day, employees can call 2-1-1 to make sure they do not waste time contacting services that will not be able to meet their needs. A call to 2-1-1 in the evening could mean one call during a lunch break for an employee versus spending their lunch break just trying to find that one service on their own. Also, businesses can use 2-1-1 in addition or instead of traditional employee assistance programs.
How Does 2-1-1 Help in Emergencies and Disasters?
2-1-1 has played a critical role in providing information to citizens before, during and after community crises.
In the Katrina and Rita hurricanes and most recently in the California wildfires 2-1-1 provided essential information and back up services to 9-1-1.
